WHO Raises Concern Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than a tenth of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial advice on the drugs.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for increased and just availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per projections, over two billion could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and ongoing care," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and logistical bottlenecks are significant obstacles to broad access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, notes the organization.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the present best projected case, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The advice urges governments and firms to expand availability, by approaches including licensing agreements.

A patent on semaglutide – the core ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

The injections imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and boost the sense of being full so individuals eat less.

Individuals commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research suggests users may regain a significant portion a year later of discontinuing the drug, because their usual hunger resume.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your likelihood for developing health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects people in countries worldwide and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
