Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
