The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
