Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
