The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
